⚽️ Match: Bayern Munich – Schalke
⚽️ Competition: Bundesliga
🗓 Date: 18.09.2020
Predictions for this Friday’s German Bundesliga fixture. Bayern aims to start their title defense with a bang at the Allianz Arena.
- Bayern Munich have opened the scoring in eight of their last nine Bundesliga home games
- Bayern Munich have won eight of their last ten league meetings with
Schalke by at least two goals
- Schalke have failed to win in any of their last nine visits to the Allianz Arena
Expect more ruthlessness from champions Bayern
Bayern Munich was irrepressible in the second half of the 2019-20 Bundesliga season and added both a DFB-Pokal triumph and Champions League title to their trophy cabinet before the campaign concluded.
They demonstrated ruthlessness along the way when crushing Barcelona 8-2 and putting five goals past the likes of Eintracht Frankfurt and Fortuna Dusseldorf in their final league fixtures last term.
Hansi Flick has led the Bavarians to 25 wins in their previous 26 matches and they will once again prove extremely difficult opponents for any Bundesliga outfit this term.
Schalke is the unfortunate side who must lock horns with Bayern Munich on the opening day of the season and they go into the game off the back of a starkly contrasting campaign, in which they collected a disappointing 39 points from their 34 encounters.
David Wagner’s men won only nine matches all season – as many as relegation-threatened Augsburg – and their tally of only 38 goals scored was the lowest outside of the bottom two.
Schalke need time to adjust to personnel changes
They have looked to enhance their front line with the additions of veteran striker Vedad Ibisevic and loanee Goncalo Paciencia but have also lost key players such as midfield revelation Weston McKennie, who has moved to Juventus, first-choice goalkeeper Alexander Nubel, who now plies his trade for Bayern, and striker Michael Gregoritsch, who has returned to parent club Augsburg.
There is plenty of work to be done at Schalke and given that they have trailed at the break in four of their previous six league games, they could be set for an embarrassing defeat, especially at Bayern’s fortress – the Allianz Arena.
Allianz thrashing on the cards
Bayern Munich won 13, drew two, and lost two of their 17 home matches in the Bundesliga last term, conceding only 15 league goals in their own backyard, where they also kept seven clean sheets.
With Robert Lewandowski, Thomas Muller, Serge Gnabry, and new signing Leroy Sane all expected to start, Bayern Munich should make the most of the quick transition between seasons and pick up from where they left off in 2019-20.
We predict they will win by at least three goals and therefore advise backing them at -2 on the handicap while our correct score prediction is 3-0, given the Bavarians shut out Schalke in both their league meetings last season.
